The solar panel on this 4 LED rechargeable light is worn out after a year or so. The original light with 2 AA batteries never last through the night when charged . I replaced two of the blown leds with smaller 3 mm LEDs which I have plenty of. I installed higher capacity AA rechargeable batteries and a much bigger solar panel. I charged it for 3 or 4 hours in the sun today and it has been burning brightly for 3 hours now. I will monitor it tomorrow as the 1.8 watt panel might overcharge the AA batteries. I incorrectly labeled the solar light as Maverick. Actually, the brand is Malibu and the light seems to be well constructed.

I have it in case our dog gets lost at night, or if we think there is a potential threat (aka potential intruder) in our yard. However, the light is also a great choice for camping or possibly marine applications. Pros- - Very direct beam - the light is narrow and penetrating - Charges fully within 8 hours - Has a car adapter - Not too heavy - Affordable Areas for improvement - Other spotlights have two settings - Ultra-bright and one that is less intense that is handy for saving the battery. - Need to keep an eye on how long it charges - charging for over 24 hours can ruin the battery. - Like all powerful Halogen lights - it generates heat. Be careful leaving the light on an unattended. Final Verdict - Great light- I am very happy with its performance. 5 stars

DIY: USB Solar Rechargeable Light & Mobile Charger

If you want to make this project, keep in mind that I had some mistakes during making this project: 1. i forgot the resistors for LEDs, you should use resistors for LEDs to save your battery charges for long time. 2. Those solar boards are each 1.4V with 350mA current rate which are not powerful enough to push the charges into batteries, you should use 3 or 4 of them. In the next project I explain this more with correct practical examples. 3. Calculate and install a resistor for USB charging input because we are not allowed to withdraw more than 500mA of current from a USB out put. 4. Batteries are not for ever, you should install them in away to be easily replaceable after a year or 2, max 3 years. 5. Make it beautiful with a good carpentry and design, do not make as ugly as I did, you better drill the HDD platters and install LEDs directly on the surface. 6. if you use this project for study only, you should use a white plastic board, not a transparent plastic board that I used, it will disturb your eyes during study. 7. an advance project of this type with very correct engineering calculations and circuit installations would be coming soon, you better make that one if you really want to make one. Umbrella Spotlight

A project I made to keep the darkness off. It has an articulated baltic birch, maple and bamboo frame with 6 Luxeon Rebel 1000ma LEDs each putting out about 310 lumens, or 1860lm for the set. For comparison, your average LED flashlight kicks out about 100lm or so. This thing is rather bright so the fedora is a safety feature as well as a fashion statement. The wooden frame articulates, allowing the LEDS to pivot between fully inward facing to fully outward simply by raising and lowering the umbrella slider. This allows the umbrella to cast everything from a tight spot, to a wide doughnut of light. Right now I am powering it off an 18v cordless drill battery, at full brightness I can get about 3 hours before I have to recharge it. The ultimate plan is to run a few cylindrical rechargeable cells inside a hollow metal handle. Oh, and in real life it doesn't make that choir noise.... yet.
